Annual Cardiovascular Research Day

Cardiovascular Research Day was established in 2012 to highlight basic, translational and clinical research underway at Washington University at the Medical School and on the Danforth Campus and to foster collaborators among investigators/laboratories at Washington University engaged in cardiovascular research. Each year, Research Day includes more than fifty (50) poster presentations by graduate students, postdoctoral research fellows and cardiology postdoctoral fellows at a poster session. In addition, short research talks are presented by junior faculty members, typically in the first or second year of establishing their own laboratories at the Medical School or on the Danforth Campus. The keynote address on Research Day is the Burton E. Sobel Lecture, established in 2013 to honor Burton E. Sobel, MD, who served as the Chief of Cardiology at Washington University and Barnes Hospital from 1974 – 1994.

Burton E. Sobel Lecture

Dr. Sobel earned his medical degree from Harvard Medical School in 1962. After internship, residency, and cardiology training and several years at the University of California, San Diego, Dr. Sobel was recruited as the Director of the Cardiovascular Division at the School of Medicine and at Barnes and Wohl Hospitals in 1973. He was named the Tobias and Hortense Lewin Distinguished Professor in Cardiovascular Disease in 1985. Nationally and internationally recognized as a leader in cardiovascular medicine, Dr. Sobel made major contributions to understanding and treating of heart attacks, including methods for dissolving blood clots, as well as to the understanding of cardiovascular disease in the context of type 2 diabetes and insulin resistance. He pioneered the development of the clot-dissolving drug tissue plasminogen activator (tPA).

Past Burton E. Sobel Lecturers are: Eric N. Olson, PhD (2013), Helen Hobbs, MD (2014), Brian K. Kobilka, MD (2015), Christine Seidman, MD (2016), Peter Libby, MD (2017), Igor Efimov, PhD (2018), Leslie Leinwand, PhD (2019),  E. Dale Abel, MD, PhD (2021) and Jane E. Freedman, MD (2022).

The Edward Massie Distinguished Lectureship was established in 1984 to honor Edward Massie, MD, a graduate of Washington University and Washington University Medical School and a member of the faculty from 1938 to 1978. Dr. Massie was the Director of the Heart Station at Barnes Hospital from 1941 to 1970. A national leader in electrocardiography, Dr. Massie pioneered the development of computer-assisted analyses of electrocardiograms and he was one of the founders of the Scientific Councils of the American Heart Association.
